We are happy to inform you that the 7th ACES International Workshop will be held at Otaru Grand Park Hotel, Hokkaido, Japan from October 3 to October 8, 2010. Otaru is a pretty city located 40km northwest of Sapporo.
The APEC Cooperation for Earthquake Simulation (ACES) is a multi-lateral grand challenge science research cooperation of APEC (the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation). ACES aims to develop realistic supercomputer simulation models for the complete earthquake generation process and to assimilate observations into such models. This capability provides a powerful "virtual laboratory" to probe earthquake behaviour and the earthquake cycle. Hence, it offers a new opportunity to gain the understanding of the earthquake nucleation process, precursory phenomena, and space-time seismicity patterns needed for breakthrough advances in earthquake forecasting and hazard quantification. The project represents a grand scientific challenge because of the complexity of phenomena and range of scales from microscopic to global involved in the earthquake generation process.
The workshop will consist of eight plenary scientific sessions:
Session 1: Microscopic simulation
Session 2: Scaling physics
Session 3: Macro-scale simulation: Earthquake generation and cycles
Session 4: Macro-scale simulation: Dynamic rupture and wave propagation
Session 5: Computational environment and algorithms
Session 6: Data assimilation and understanding
Session 7: Model applications
Session 8: Other geoscience simulations
Every participant is encouraged to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation. Full peer-reviewed papers will be published as a special volume after the Workshop.
